At least 13 individuals killed and ninety-eight wounded in train crash in Mexico.
A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the pace and execution of the country's flagship government projects.
The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the reasons behind this tragedy,” stated the head of state.
The official announced that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The president stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose time in office ended the prior year. This venture was a hallmark of his leadership's economic vision for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to revitalize the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The development of both rail lines was overseen by the army, marking a significant growth of its responsibilities in civilian projects. They were executed at an fast-tracked pace, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also sparked significant apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an previous accident this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced two non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a primary political opposition demanded an urgent pause in the development and management of all similar projects.
This halt was requested while awaiting a full technical review. The party emphasized that the loss of life "demands prompt explanations."
In response, the head of state maintained that the train had been running in full accordance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and operation of these national initiatives.
