Cancellieri Displays Glimpses of Exceptional Talent in Silver Lining for Unstable Lazio
The feeling at the Stadio Olimpico was far from happy this past Saturday. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a side that had allowed ten goals while managing only two goals in their last five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their latest protest in a continuous dispute with chairman Claudio Lotito.
This Year's Efforts Unraveling?
Had their campaign unraveling, or did there exist any cohesion holding it together to start with? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri as head coach this summer, only for him admitted that the management had not mentioned a ban on new signings they were about to receive for financial irregularities. Reports that he could resign were not true, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "swindled" him.
The Roman club were just as chaotic in their performances as off the field, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in the remaining first five games, featuring the derby della Capitale. Throughout this period, observers have struggled to determine if they're getting better or imploding.
The Youngster's Surprising Presence
At least one man remained positive throughout. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to remain with Lazio this season. He was on the previous campaign at Parma as a loanee and, during the summer break, his parent club were attempting to remain there a while longer. The registration embargo necessitated a reconsideration. Lazio could not afford to reduce their roster without replacements.
He signed in the first place during Sarri's previous tenure, then a 20-year-old graduate of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 league appearances in Lazio colors in the 2022-23 season, all but one of those as a substitute. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed after that campaign, subsequently claimed Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri was destined for stardom then never playing him."
Uncovering His Best Role
Perhaps the manager was persistently working to determine the nature of Cancellieri's abilities. Billed as a flank player when he joined, Cancellieri yet was deployed for the majority of that term as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile at No 9. Across 63 games on loan at Empoli and Parma in the past two years, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
