Patients Discontinuing Slimming Jabs Put On Pounds Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who stop using popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who stop conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Published data in a major health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"People using such treatments should be cognizant of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery suggests a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Therapies

The analysis, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.

Researchers emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically have a more gradual creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Explaining the Quick Regain

Experts propose the way of the jabs is key to understanding the heightened regain.

The injections mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this medication leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."

A Chronic Condition?

Health authorities suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals argue that, given the significant potential of relapse, the treatment should be considered ongoing.

This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "highlight the chronic character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Accounts

People who have come off the medication report a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if something that goes on and I was suddenly starving," described an individual.

The struggle is compounded if patients have not established permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Widespread Use

Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.

  • Use is higher among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and long-term success relies on integrated behavioural support.
