The Global Health Body Raises Concern Over Acute Shortage of Obesity Injections

Fewer than one in 10 patients who could benefit from obesity jabs like Wegovy have access to them, states the global health agency as it issues its inaugural guidance on the drugs.

Considering in excess of 1,000,000,000 people worldwide currently classified as obese, it is advocating for increased and just access to GLP-1 medication.

Per forecasts, over two billion will be obese by 2030 without intervention.

"Our latest guidance affirms that excess weight is a lifelong illness that can be treated with comprehensive and ongoing care," remarked WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Significant expense, limited production capacity, and distribution challenges are significant obstacles to widespread availability to the jabs that can aid individuals in losing significant body mass, notes the agency.

GLP-1 Therapy Supply Crisis

Even in the current most optimistic scenario, the production of such drugs would only suffice for around 100 million people – less than 10% of those who need them, per the health organization.

The recommendation encourages nations and manufacturers to widen availability, through strategies such as voluntary licensing.

The intellectual property rights on a key compound – the core ingredient of the drug Wegovy – is due to expire in several countries in 2026.

How Obesity Injections Operate

GLP-1 drugs mimick a body's own hormone to reduce digestion speed, curb appetite and boost feelings of fullness so individuals eat less.

Individuals commonly start to lose weight in the initial weeks of starting on the once-weekly jabs.

Research indicates patients may put most of the weight back on after a year of halting the medication, when their usual hunger return.

Being above a healthy weight elevates your risk for developing health problems, such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular issues, brain attack, and specific malignancies.

Obesity concerns people in every country and was associated with over three and a half million fatalities worldwide in 2024, as per the WHO.
